How Dūbu works

The reference for the app: what decks are, the three ways to play, exactly how a score becomes a percentage, and what tokens do. Everything here is checked against what the app and its servers actually do.

Overview

Dūbu helps you prepare for a citizenship or civics test by learning the society itself — its history, institutions, geography and everyday life — rather than by drilling a question bank. You study themed decks of cards, then test yourself in one of three modes.

Sweden is the first country covered. The country you choose decides which decks, quizzes and leaderboard you see, and you can change it later from your profile.

Getting started

You sign in with Google and accept the Terms and Privacy Policy. Then you choose your goal — citizenship, settling in, relocation or curiosity — the country you are studying for, and the language you want to study in. Your goal decides which Home screen you get, and you can change it later from your profile.

New accounts start with 10 tokens, granted once when your profile is first created. What tokens are for is explained under Tokens.

Your Home screen

Home is laid out by the goal you chose. Change the goal in your profile and Home switches straight away.

  • Citizenship. Home opens with Passport Fokus: what an attempt costs, the record to beat, your own best and your readiness. Below it come your exam date, the question of the day, the deck you are studying, the Arena, Trials, the leaderboard, Saved cards and Review.
  • Settling in, relocation or curiosity. Home opens with the deck you are studying, then a progress strip — cards studied, decks started and, from your third round, your average score — followed by the question of the day, the Arena, Trials, the leaderboard, Saved cards and Review.

Readiness

Your readiness is the average of your last three mock exams in the country you are studying. It appears once you have sat your first one. It is Dūbu's estimate from your recent results — never a prediction that you will pass.

Exam date

Set the date of your test and Home counts down the days. Dūbu reminds you 30, 14, 7, 3 and 1 days before, and on the morning of the exam. Once the date has passed, it asks how it went.

Question of the day

One free question a day, picked on your phone — from the exam syllabus if your goal is citizenship, otherwise from any deck you have. Answer it to see whether you were right, the correct answer and an explanation. A new question comes the next day.

Decks and cards

Content is organised into decks — themed sets of study cards, such as the Vikings, the political system, or food. Sweden has 28 decks. Some are free; others are a one-off purchase. Once a deck is yours it stays yours, and it is downloaded to your phone so you can study without a connection.

Each card is one subject: a summary of why it matters, the facts worth remembering, and — depending on the card — a timeline, the key figures, a quote, or a "did you know". Swipe left and right to move between cards. Cards can be read aloud, and cards you have already seen are marked, so a deck's progress reflects what you have actually studied.

Card value — why some cards are worth more

Every card carries a value from 1 to 4: roughly, how central the subject is to the exam. That value is what a question about the card is worth when you play, so time spent on the heavier cards pays off twice — once in what you know, once in what you score. See Scoring.

Cards on the official exam syllabus are marked with a star. Those are the cards Passport Fokus draws from.

Every deck has its own page showing how many cards it holds, how many are starred, and a few sample card titles. On a deck you have, Quiz me tests you on 10 of its cards for free. A paid deck is a one-off purchase made with money through Google Play — not with tokens — and is yours permanently.

The three ways to play

All three draw on the same content and are scored identically. What differs is who you are measured against, what it costs, and whether it counts for rank.

Arena

1st daily free then 1 token

The daily quiz. The only mode that puts you on the leaderboard.

Trials

Always free

Unlimited practice. Builds your stats, never ranked.

Passport Fokus

2 tokens

The mock exam, from starred cards. One record to beat.

Arena — the daily quiz

One quiz per country per day, the same questions for everyone, drawn fresh each morning from the whole question pool. For Sweden it is 25 questions. The quiz is generated at midnight, opens at 01:00 local time, and closes at 23:55 local time, when the day's winner is decided. It is the only mode that puts you on the leaderboard.

Your first Arena play each day is free. You can play again as often as you like for 1 token an attempt — only your best attempt of the day counts.

During an Arena round you are not shown whether an answer was right — the answers come on the results screen. That keeps a free first attempt from teaching you the key for a paid replay.

Trials — practice

An unlimited practice round drawn from the same pool, costing nothing. Trials results are yours alone: they build your stats, but they do not count towards your streak and never appear on the Arena leaderboard.

Passport Fokus — the mock exam

Fixed, exam-shaped quizzes built only from starred, on-syllabus cards — the closest thing in the app to sitting the real test. Each quiz keeps a single record to beat for your country: the best score anyone has set on it, with the holder's name and time. There is no live ranking, just that record.

Passport Fokus costs 2 tokens an attempt, every time — there is no free attempt.

Every mode is timed as a whole round rather than per question. The lobby tells you how many questions the round holds and how long you have before you start it.

Leaving a round early

In the Arena and Passport Fokus, leaving a round submits the answers you have given so far and uses up the attempt — tokens are not refunded. Leaving Trials or a deck quiz simply discards the run.

Every results screen lists your answers with explanations. A question you got wrong from a paid deck you do not own keeps its answer hidden until you unlock the deck.

Scoring

Every mode scores the same way, and scoring happens on our servers against the answer key — never on your phone.

What each outcome is worth
What you doWhat it is worthWhy
Answer correctly + card value (1–4) + 0.5 More central subjects are worth more. The extra half point is the same on every question.
Answer wrongly − 0.25 A flat penalty, whatever the card is worth. A guess costs a little, never as much as a right answer earns.
Skip, or run out of time − 0.25 The same as a wrong answer, so there is nothing to gain by leaving a question blank rather than trying.
Finish below zero 0 Your total never goes negative, however the round went.

Your points are then turned into a percentage of what the round was worth:

score % = points earned ÷ ( every question's value + 0.5 ) × 100

A perfect round is 100%, and the percentage means the same thing whether the quiz happened to be full of value-1 cards or value-4 ones. That percentage is what the leaderboard ranks, what your best score records, and what a Passport Fokus record is measured in.

A worked example

A 10-question round holds four value-1 cards, four value-2 and two value-3, so it is worth (4×1 + 4×2 + 2×3) + (10 × 0.5) = 23 points in all.

You answer eight correctly — three value-1, three value-2 and two value-3, which is 3 + 6 + 6 = 15, plus 0.5 × 8 = 4, so 19 points. You get one wrong and skip one: −0.5. Your score is 18.5 out of 23, or 80%.

The leaderboard

There are three tabs, and all are scoped to your country — a score in Sweden never competes against a score in another country.

  • Today. Everyone who played today's Arena, ranked. A fresh board starts tomorrow.
  • Yesterday. Yesterday's final standings, so you can see where you finished after the day closed.
  • All time. Your best Arena score ever, ranked against everyone else's best.

Ranking is by score percentage, highest first. When two players tie, the faster round wins. Only your best attempt counts: replaying can improve your place but never lose it, and playing ten times does not put ten entries on the board.

Trials and Passport Fokus do not appear here. Only the Arena decides rank.

Winning the day

At 23:55 local time the day's Arena closes, and whoever sits at the top of the daily board has won the day. Four things then happen, all automatically:

  • 10 tokens are added to the winner's balance — ten more Arena replays, or five Passport Fokus attempts.
  • The win is recorded on their profile and their total wins goes up by one.
  • Their best rank for that country is set to #1 — the best it can be, and it stays on record permanently.
  • Their name carries #1 on the day's board for good. Their tier is untouched — it follows the best score, and winning does not change what you scored.

You do not have to win to be counted. Everyone who finishes in the day's top 100 has their best-ever rank recorded too, so a strong day is kept even if someone edged you out at the end. Your best rank only ever improves.

The board is decided on the scores as they stand when the day closes, and attempts are not accepted afterwards — a round still unfinished at 23:55 is not counted. Tomorrow's quiz opens at 01:00.

Tokens

Tokens are what you spend to play more than the free daily round. They are a single balance shared across every country you study, and they never expire.

Tokens buy attempts and nothing else. They do not buy decks, unlock answers, or change how anything is scored. Studying, Trials, and your one daily Arena round are always free.

Token packs and deck purchases go through Google Play, and every purchase is verified with Google on our servers before anything is added to your account.

Streak, tiers and stats

Your day streak counts consecutive days you have played the Arena. Trials and Passport Fokus rounds do not count towards it.

Your tier is a title earned by your best Arena score percentage in the country you are studying. Ten levels, and it only ever goes up — a bad round cannot cost you a tier you have already earned. Winning a day does not change it: what you score does.

The badge beside your name on the leaderboard is this same tier, so you can see at a glance how ready everyone in the standings is — not just how they placed today.

Your profile also keeps quizzes played, overall accuracy, best Arena score, best Passport Fokus score, best rank, and how far you have got through each deck. That is yours: nothing but your display name, score and time is ever shown to other players, and only on the leaderboard.

Review and saved cards

Review collects every question you got wrong or skipped, in any mode. Answer one correctly and it leaves the list. It keeps up to 300 questions.

Saved cards are cards you bookmark while studying, with the bookmark in the card's header. You can then study just those cards.

Both are kept on this phone only — they do not move to a new one.

Notifications

Dūbu asks to send notifications only when they become useful — for example when you first set an exam date. After that it can send:

  • The question of the day, at the reminder time you choose.
  • A streak reminder, only when your streak is at risk before the Arena closes.
  • Exam countdown reminders, if you have set an exam date.
  • News from Dūbu.

The question of the day and the streak reminder never add up to more than two notifications a day, and none of the reminders are sent on the quiet days you choose. Each kind can be switched off in your profile.

Languages and offline

You choose one study language: it changes the cards and questions themselves — the country's own language, English, or one of many others translated on your device. The app's own buttons and menus follow it when Dūbu is translated into that language (English, Swedish, Bengali or Arabic), and stay in English otherwise.

Translation happens on the phone, not on our servers, so it keeps working offline once a language has downloaded. Quizzes are scored in the language you played in.

Decks you own are stored on the device, so studying works with no connection at all. Passport Fokus needs a connection to start, because the attempt is paid for up front; if the connection drops during a round, your result is sent the next time you are online. The Arena needs a connection, because it is scored and ranked centrally.

Your account and data

You sign in with Google. Purchases, tokens, scores, your streak, tier and leaderboard places are tied to that account, so they follow you to a new phone. Your study progress through each deck, your quiz history, Review and saved cards are kept on the phone itself and do not move with you.

You can delete your account and everything in it at any time — from inside the app under Profile, or from the delete-account page. Deleting removes your profile, your study and quiz data, and your leaderboard entries, and releases any Passport Fokus record you hold. A small number of purchase and anti-fraud records are kept for legal reasons; these are never shown to other players.

Your profile and settings

From your profile you can change your goal (Home switches layout at once), your country (which takes you back through the country step), your study language and your reminders, and turn vibration (on by default) and sounds (off by default) on or off. It also holds your stats, the news, the Terms and Privacy Policy, a switch for analytics and crash reports, and a way to report a problem.

The History tab lists the rounds you have finished on this phone; open one to see its questions again. Every results screen can also be shared as an image.
