About the test
Medborgarskapsprovet is a knowledge test about Swedish society that forms part of the requirements for Swedish citizenship. It is produced by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) and follows the book Sverige i fokus, which has 13 chapters.
How the test works
The test is in Swedish, taken on paper, and made up of multiple-choice questions with four options, one of them correct. The number of questions, the time allowed and the pass mark are set by UHR — read the official description before you register.
UHR →Who has to take it
The requirement applies to anyone aged 16 to 66 who applies for Swedish citizenship. It has applied since 6 June 2026, including to applications submitted before then that were still awaiting a decision. The Swedish Migration Agency can make exceptions, for example for a disability, and some passing grades from Swedish education can show the knowledge without a test. The Swedish language test comes no earlier than autumn 2027; until then, approved language tests such as Tisus or Swedex can be used. Check what applies to your own application with the Swedish Migration Agency.
