The basics

The Swedish citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet)

What the test is based on

The test follows Sverige i fokus. The book covers civic orientation in 13 chapters — from the country's geography and democratic system to law and justice, the labour market, welfare, modern history, freedom of religion and traditions. Those are the topics you need, and they are how this site is organised.

Who has to take it

The requirement applies to anyone aged 16 to 66 who applies for Swedish citizenship. It has applied since 6 June 2026, including to applications submitted before then that were still awaiting a decision. The Swedish Migration Agency can make exceptions, for example for a disability, and some passing grades from Swedish education can show the knowledge without a test. The Swedish language test comes no earlier than autumn 2027; until then, approved language tests such as Tisus or Swedex can be used. Check what applies to your own application with the Swedish Migration Agency.

How the test works

The test is in Swedish, taken on paper, and made up of multiple-choice questions with four options, one of them correct. The number of questions, the time allowed and the pass mark are set by UHR — read the official description before you register.

UHR

Registration, fee and test dates

Registration goes through UHR. The first civics test was held in August 2026. At the time of writing (October 2026) registration was closed; UHR announces when it opens for the next sitting and publishes the fee at the same time.

Preparation

How to prepare

Read through the chapters and test yourself with multiple-choice questions until you recognise the concepts rather than remember phrasings. The practice questions here are our own and follow the topics in Sverige i fokus — they are not test questions, and nobody outside the authority knows what the test asks.
